The Galilee Missionary Baptist Church was organized on June 18, 1913 by Rev. D. Hartmond, on a lot not far from Wilburforce St. under a brush arbor.  Rev. Hartmond served as pastor for one year.

In 1914 Rev. W.M. Parker was called to pastor the church.  Pastor Parker and the congregation moved to a small building on Cohn Street.  At this time there were only two (2) churches in Acres Homes, one Baptist Galilee Missionary Baptist and one Methodist Ward Chapel African Methodist Episcopal.   Galilee worshiped in the building each 2nd and 4th Sunday and Ward Chapel worshiped each 1st and 3rd Sunday.

Pastor Smith served the Galilee family for twenty six (26) years he retired from the ministry in 1947 serving from 1921- 1947.

Bailey was a well deserving pastor to receive such an honor. He devoted so much of his time to Galilee Missionary Baptist Church and to the Acres Homes community.

On September 4, 1987, after serving as pastor of Galilee for ten (10) years, Rev. Earnest J. Booker tendered his letter of resignation to the chairman of the deacons, Bro. In the early morning hours of Saturday September 13th hurricane Ike hit Houston.  Hurricane Ike destroyed Galveston Island and many of the eastern Texas coast line cities.   Hurricane Ike was a category two storm however the winds were that of a category four storm, because of the storm’s odd configuration, the winds brought huge waves and very high surge to the coast.  Ike’s maximum sustained winds were near 80 miles per hour with higher gusts.  We were unable to celebrate our church’s 95th anniversary, many of the congregants sustained major wind damage to their homes and personal properties.  Flooding caused water damage to homes and property and many residents were without electrical power to their homes from two to four weeks due to uprooted trees lying on power lines and many power lines and poles were destroyed by the tempestuous winds caused by Hurricane Ike. Galilee’s electrical power was restored after seven days of being out, the church building sustained minor water damage and church services resumed on September 21, 2008. The Sermon:  “When Jesus Saves the Day” was the message delivered by Pastor E.A. DavisThe main thrust of every worship service at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church is the preaching of the gospel directly from the word of God.

HIGHLIGHTS IN THE HISTORY OF

GALILEE MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH

On June 18, 1913 Galilee Missionary Baptist Church was organized by Rev. D. Hartmond under a brush arbor on Wilburforce Street.  Rev. D. Hartmond served as pastor for one year.

How shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach except they be sent? Romans 10:14-15

Nine pastors have served Galilee.

These 5 Pastors; D. Hartmond, W.M. Parker, W.H. Sanders, Wilton Haynes and E.L. Hurd served Galilee for a combined total of 8 ½ years.(1913-1921.)

Pastor Jack C. Smith served for 26 years.   (1921-1947)

Pastor D.S. Bailey served for 30 years.       (1947-1977)

Pastor E.J. Booker served for 10 years.       (1977-1987)

All together these eight pastors served Galilee for a grand total of 74 ½ years.

For the past 35 ½   years standing on the shoulders of the eight Pastors who have preceded him, Pastor Doctor Edwin Allen Davis is the 9th pastor to lead Galilee.

In 1914 Galilee began its worship services in a building on Cohn Street not far from our current site. At this time there were only two churches in Acres Homes; Galilee worshipped in the building each 2nd and 4th Sunday and Ward Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church worshipped in the building each 1st and 3rd Sunday. Ward Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church was organized in February 1913 and Galilee was organized in June 1913.

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen for by it the elders obtained a good report. Hebrews 11:1-2

April 13, 1915 Galilee church trustees; Brothers; Lee Turner, Jacob Richardson and John Spencer purchased land from Alfred A. Wright president of the Wright Land Company to build a church, a place of worship in the Highland Heights Addition of Acres Homes. According to the stipulations and terms set forth in the agreement with the Wright Land Company the building had to be erected within one year or the property would revert (go back) to the Wright Land Company with no recourse through the court for these trustees or their successors.

In one year in 1916 The Sanctuary of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church was constructed.

Upon this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.   Matthew 16:18

In the early and mid 1900’s Galilee was the host church for the community’s “Speaking Meetings” this was when residents would meet and address the issues concerning our people and the Acres Homes community.

Each year many in the community would also gather at Galilee to celebrate Juneteenth. Pews were taken out of the church and placed on Deacon Green Stewart’s property on Wheatley Street to greet and accommodate the residents of the community during this coveted event.  (Shared with me by Bro. Sidney Stewart)

In 1948 the church had to be renovated because of a fire. During this time in history there was a lot of church burnings in the south (these burnings were done by night riders of the KKK). We don’t know if this was the case for Galilee however the fire was suspect.

The Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved. Acts 2:47

The sanctuary was enlarged four times and in 1961 the church was rebuilt.

In 1978 and in 1992 Sister Beulah Shepherd led the endeavor and the name of Sherwin Street was changed to D.S. Bailey Lane and Holly Street was changed to Burleson St.

This was done in honor of Pastor D.S. Bailey and Deacon Ralph Burleson.

The old fellowship hall was demolished and construction of a new hall was completed.

In February 1993 a mortgage burning ceremony was held the mortgage for the fellowship hall was paid in full in 4 ½ years.

Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us. Ephesians 3:20          Beginning in 2000 and continuing - To accommodate the growth of Galilee additional land purchases are being made. Thus far land purchases total a market and appraised value of $1.5million dollars.

August 2003 the construction of our current sanctuary was completed.

On September 14th 2003 we celebrated Galilee’s 90th anniversary and formally entered into and dedicated our new Sanctuary. The church is where Black culture strives and survives.

March 18th 2007 Galilee Missionary Baptist Church was recognized as the oldest African American Baptist Church in Acres Homes by the State of Texas and the Harris County Historical Commission. A Historical Marker Dedication Ceremony was held and the Historical Marker was unveiled. This event was spearheaded by Sister Martha Branch who worked with Mrs. Debra Blacklock- Sloan of the Historical Commission. Mrs. Blacklock- Sloan is a Historical researcher and Genealogist.

But thanks be to God, which gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, un-moveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as you know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord. I Corinthians 15:57-58

On December 3, 2017 God’s provision for paying off our sanctuary was realized. A “Mortgage Burning Ceremony” was held and we celebrated the mortgage for our sanctuary being paid in full in 14 ½ years.

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations baptizing them in the name of The Father and of The Son and of the Holy Ghost.  Matthew 28:19

On November 05, 2023 Pastor Davis, appointed Dr. Carvis Junious as Director of Trustees and Deacon William Johnson as Director of Deacons....("...and what they need most of all, is not for you to run and complain to them; they need your prayers...as they stay focused on the job that's before them, Amen." - Dr. Edwin A. Davis, Pastor).

Since June 18, 1913 the doors of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church have been open welcoming the saints of God proclaiming the word of God.  Now 110 years old Galilee continues to be a vibrant church with a passion for saving souls. Galilee Missionary Baptist Church is more than just a church it is a fellowship of believers coming together to declare the Glory of the Lord and to celebrate Jesus as King.

Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and the sin which does so easily beset us and let us run with patience the race that is set before us. Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross despising the shame and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

We fervently look forward to being contributors and partakers in the creation of another chapter in the history of Galilee.

The Galilee legacy has been set in motion since 1913 by Christians from generation to generation. Galilee Missionary Baptist Church a church where Jesus is Lord and His word is supreme.
